Bantus Singapore is 3 today!

Time to thank everyone who has been here since the beginning…you know who you are!

The original cast (circa 16 Aug 05)

A stroll down memory lane: The original cast of Bantus Singapore (circa 16 Aug 2005) @ the gas station at Barker Road. The chicken pies there were very popular with us!

A big shout to our 3-year-olds: Giraia, Coruja, Lua, Tocha, Tocastor, Pouca Coisa, Indio and Sombra for their longsuffering and loyalty - for bearing with us as we moved from one location to another, and giving us a reason to keep Bantus Singapore going. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm!

Visitors from abroad

With Amarela and Anu - our first expatriate students. Panda (Rod) from Down Under dropped by for a class .

Our first Bantus teenagers! We were an adult class until the dynamic duo joined us. Life has not been the same since they started training with us! We love you guys!

We want to thank Mestre Pintor for saying YES! when we asked if he would take us in and start a Bantus Singapore. We want to thank Claudinho for saying YES! to Mestre who flew him halfway around the world on a one-way ticket from Brasil to Singapore even though he could only speak two words of English! On top of that, he was given only 3 weeks’ notice! We also want to thank Rafael for saying YES! even before we asked for his help (what a guy!) as well as to Coelho and Tataruga (from Bantus KL) for their help (and emotional support!) - you guys were like our midwives(!) Most of all, we want to thank all our students for choosing to train with Bantus Singapore! Three cheers to you!

To celebrate this important day, we decided to invade Sentosa this Saturday 5th July 2008 for a Bantus anniversary picnic.

Where? Tanjong Beach (walk past KM8)

What time? Drop by anytime from 1pm onwards (til the last Bantus member leaves)

Bring your sunblock/sunglasses/mat to put the food and our barang barang/drinking water/swim gear/XTRA set of clothes coz u will get wet/food n drinks for yourself and 2 other persons/shower stuff

Plastic cutlery, plates and cups will be provided.

Dogs are welcome (as long they don’t end up eating the food!) and so are your parents/significant other.

If it pours, we shall postpone the picnic to Sunday 6th July. Same time, same place.

See you there!

Forró classes by Claudinho

For the first time in Singapore, Forró - Brazil’s most popular couple dancing among the young and old -will being taught by a native Brasileiro.

Claudinho, our Capoeira instructor, happens to be a great Forró dancer (even though he is way too modest to admit it). Just watch him steering his female dance partner around the dancefloor and you’ll know what I mean by a smouldering sexy Latino taking the lead (no kidding). Unfortunately, I was unable to upload a video of him dancing Forró but this Youtube video is muito bom and gives you an idea of how Forró is danced by os brasileiros themselves.

Even if you don’t have any prior dance background, we can assure you that Claudinho has taught some of us who only boast of having two left feet and we could still Forró quite decently - not to the point of sizzle but you get the idea!

Or you think you can dance but don’t have a partner to dance with, don’t fret. It’s contact dancing so someone will dance with you. And guys, you get to lead! We mulher will just follow…er, your lead…

What to wear? It’s casual. You can even come in your bermudas and T-shirt and dance barefooted. That’s how they dance Forró in Brasil. But if you prefer to come in your work clothes, that’s fine too. So long as you are comfortable.

We hope to gather enough Forró enthusiasts so we can eventually host Forró parties regularly!
