Reflections on our 2nd Batizado

Every batizado holds a different memory. Last year, at our first, we breathed a collective sigh of relief as we made it to our first one successfully and cordas were handed out to our first batch of students. Thus, the second year began as the same batch of students diligently applied themselves. More beginners joined us and before we knew it, it was corda-making time again!

This year, we are again proud to hand out cordas to our new beginners. Our two youngest are under seven years old!

More importantly, we are prouder still, of our first batch of corda coral students, who have remained steadfast in their training, proving their mettle and graduating to the next level. Congratulations and more axé to our new corda verde students! Time for you to step up to the plate!

As usual, just when we thought it’s all over, Claudinho makes a surprise announcement. Three more cordas to hand out. This time, it’s to graduate three students to corda verde-amarelo. We are relieved to announce that Tempeiro, Risadinha and Tocastor survived four to five rounds each with the various instructors and Mestre himself to receive their new cordas (in one piece).

For me, our second batizado distinguished three ranks of students in our school for the first time. It feels good. And we couldn’t have done it without Claudinho’s commitment and passion. Without help from the rest of our worldwide Bantus family. Without Mestre Pintor who thought it was a great idea to have Bantus here. Most of all, without each one of you who is part of Bantus Singapore. To you, we owe our heartfelt thanks.

Bantus Singapore 2nd Batizado

We kicked off our series of workshops with a special guest, Mr Leslie Ng from 1Physiotherapy, Bantus Singapore’s official physiotherapist, with a timely talk on injury prevention and a demo using a triggerball, a revolutionary technique to warm up our joints, which proved so effective that nearly all the triggerballs that Leslie had brought along with him were grabbed up immediately after the enlightening session. For more information on injury prevention, go to 1physiotherapy.com

This was followed by a Q & A session with Mestre Pintor who took the time to explain the finer aspects of Capoeira and answering questions from our students. Judging from the nature of the questions from the floor, I have to say with great pride that we certainly have a bunch of students who have been doing their own studying and researching on capoeira!

The next few nights, fellow Bantus instructors: Professor Gringo Leonides (Australia), Graduado Zoi (the Netherlands), Instructor Geléia (Germany), Instructor Rafael (Malaysia) and Instructor Grâo (Brazil) led warm-ups, tweaked and refined our technique, challenged us to our limits with new floreios, and showed great form and wit in the roda. So far, the workshops have been fun and refreshing. And definitely an eye-opener for many who have just realised that being in Bantus is really belonging to one big worldwide family. That thought itself is very reassuring.

In two days’ time, we will be witnessing our 2nd batizado cum troca de corda. Our Bantus family along with friends and relatives will gather at Istana Park from 10 am to 2pm to officially initiate our beginners into the capoeira family and test the mettle of our first cordas to see if they are ready to go to the next level. We wish all our beginners and first corda students all the best and muito axé this Sunday 14th October 2007. See you there!

Please note: No classes on Monday 15th October 2007. Classes will resume from Tuesday 16th October 2007.
