Spills, thrills and knockouts

Scene 1: At our last workshop.

The workshops were well-attended as Mestre, Gringo and Rafael showed us the finer points of moving more eloquently around in a roda using their sequences. It was fun because we got to learn more and had our moves tweaked. Of course, the best part was having a roda and trying to apply what we had just learnt and playing with the instructors. But the icing on top of the cake was watching the instructors play and learning from them!

Scene 2: At the batizado

When playing with the instructors or Mestre during the batizado, we try very hard to impress them ‘coz there are too many cameras clicking away…

you could grin away like Jan as you get squashed…

grimace like Curinga as you approach your downfall…

or try to look like Rambo…

Then again, you could collapse into the arms of your instructor or Mestre (a la Austin Powers “Oops I fell over…”)

or hard ground…

You could go…

Scene 3: Fishing 101

Watching a batizado is like watching fishermen at work. There’s more than one way to catch a fish - You could follow Mestre’s example below…

while Peixe is alive and still kicking…or

by surprise as demonstrated by Rafael below.

Either way, try not to let your fish escape!

Watch out, too, for predatory birds going for your catch (as well as harmless ones…)

Post-Batizado BBQ

Well, the roda da rua at Vivo City lasted only half an hour because Singapore hasn’t made enough room for the arts to flourish in front of the malls. And it hasn’t occur to the mall sharks that having a roda in front of their mall would attract a lot more fish for their retailers. Sem chance. That’s why Singapore is still not a world-class city yet. The arts should own the sidewalks if Singapore wants to add vibrancy to its image. Not the mall sharks.

Still, we managed to “baptize” our last student, Joanne, who couldn’t make it the day before because she was hospitalized. Congrats, Prea (by the way, your apelido means “guinea pig” in Portuguese). Thanks to Albert Lim, a professional shutterbug, who happened to be there to catch a beautiful moment in time for us.

After that, we decided to head over to Peixe’s poolside for an early start to our post-Batizado BBQ.

Our first cordaos!!!!!

Thirty-nine of us - adults, teenagers and kids - got “baptized” with our first ranked cordaos this afternoon.

Congratulations to everyone! Yeah! We are officially capoeiristas!

Of course the big surprise was when three students “trocar de cordao” after getting their first cordaos - Tempeiro, Risadinha and Tocastor. Thank you! Mestre and Claudinho!

Sunday Roda @ Vivo City

We are all congregating in front of Bakerzin (street level) facing the fountain deck at 3pm. Do wear your abada to show off your new cordao and school t-shirt. If the weather looks iffy by 2.30pm on your side of the island, give Claudinho, Tempeiro or me a buzz to reconfirm. And don’t forget to ask your folks and friends to come down and join us!

Gringo’s Workshop

Bantus Singapore 1st Batizado

We have woven the last of the cordaos. Some of us have waited more than a year for this and many have no clue what’s going to happen at a batizado. All we can say is that it will be memorable and fun.

With Mestre Pintor (Brazil), Professor Gringo (Perth), Instrutor Rafael and Cueca (KL) in town to grace our first big deal event with their presence and expertise, you can expect to learn more capoeira, maculele, samba de roda and forro and songs at the workshops. Be prepared to sweat. And don’t forget to bring the cameras and videocams to catch the high-octane action when these guys jogar!
